Undergraduate Double Majors, Triple Majors, Double Degrees, and Joint Majors
Double and Triple Majors in Anthropology
Frequently, students will apply for major status in an additional department, or even in two additional departments. Students should inform the Undergraduate Office and the Faculty advisors of this choice, to ensure that it is properly recorded in the student file.
Double Degree in Anthropology (B.A.) and a B.S. Program
It is also possible to major in Anthropology (which awards a Bachelor of Arts degree) and another program awarding a B.S. (Bachelor of Science) degree. This is not at all an uncommon occurrence, especially for those students who plan on going to medical or dental school. Double degree students must still complete all major requirements for each program. Students should inform the Undergraduate Office and the Faculty advisor of this designation, to ensure that it is properly recorded in the student file.
Joint Majors in Anthropology
The Department of Anthropology offers a joint major with other departments offering B.A. degrees in the Arts and Sciences. The joint major is an opportunity for students to develop an individualized degree program spanning two departments, while taking a smaller number of credits in each course of study than a double major would require.
A student in the joint major takes APY 106, APY 107, APY 108, plus five Anthropology electives, including at least one Area Studies and one Problem-oriented/Theoretical elective. The Practicum, Senior Seminar, and Statistics course are not required. Interested students should propose a program of study in consultation with their Anthropology faculty advisor and with their advisor in the other department. Their proposed plan of study should then be submitted to the Undergraduate Office, to be entered into student's departmental file. Subsequent courses taken should conform to the plan. A grade of C- (or better) is required in all courses taken for joint major credit and a GPA of at least 2.0 must be maintained through completion of the program.
